Live Praise & Worship Guitar Lessons

I have played this music for over 20 years.  My goal here is to give students a way to go about learning tunes quickly, how to be creative with them, how to be prepared for any surprises, as well as how to curate appropriate guitar tones for each tune.  There is often a wide range of abilities between musicians at church.  I will work to assist you in understanding your role in a worship band, and how to prepare for playing on Sunday.

FAQs

Who is this course for?

Anyone who has been playing in worship bands for a while, but wish to contribute in a stronger musical way and be more versatile in terms of playing more complex rhythm and lead parts.

What are the prerequisites?

Having a basic understanding of the circle of 5ths, key signatures, and chord construction is helpful, but we will go over those topics as they become relevant.

Do I need to know theory for this course?

All pertinent theory will be discussed throughout the course, but basic scale and chord knowledge will certainly help things go quicker.

Does it matter if I play electric or acoustic?

Both. The fundmental roll of the guitarist doesn’t change much between electric and acoustic. Having said that, I will taylor the lessons to focus on your preference and give you tools to function in any type of P&W band situation.

What styles of music will this course focus on?

Mostly modern praise and worship music over the past 10-15 years.  I will also incorporate some hymns and gospel examples for those that play those types of praise music.

Can I record the lessons?

Yes, but I ask that you keep them for your own private viewing.

Can we play together during the lesson?

It is possible, but only if you have an account with JamKazam, a direct Ethernet cable to your router, talkback mic, and appropriate digital I/O. Jamkazm will run an automated test on your setup and let you know of any signal speed bottlenecks.

What do I need for this lesson technically?

All lessons are done through zoom. A reasonably fast, clear internet connection, a webcam, and your guitar are the basic requirements. If you wear headphones, make sure there is an onboard microphone to pickup the sound of your guitar. If you have an audio interface, that’s even better to separate your guitar signal and your headphone signal. A big monitor is also helpful to clearly see me, my guitar, and any written material I display on the screen

What materials do I need for this course?

Any written materials used for the lessons I will provide… but having a capo will be helpful. Yes, even pros use capos…:)

Will we be doing any performing in this class?

Absolutely, any example I use or tune you suggest, it’s beneficial to play through and hear these concepts in action and get them under your fingers.

Cancelled Lessons Policy
